Osterholz-Scharmbeck, January 5, 2024 – A compelling comedy of morals and manipulation is set to grace the stage at Gut Sandbeck this month, as the Scharmbecker speeldeel prepares to perform “The loan” by Spanish playwright Jordi galceran. The play, which centers around a desperate borrower’s outrageous ultimatum, promises an evening of sharp wit and unexpected twists.

The production marks a welcome reunion for a talented trio and brings another High German play to a venue often showcasing Low German performances.

The story unfolds as Mr. Goetz (Ralf Frerichs), a bank manager accustomed to routine loan requests, finds himself facing an applicant unlike any other. Anton Schmidt (Mathias Hobein) doesn’t simply plead his case; he issues a startling ultimatum: approve his loan, or he’ll pursue the banker’s wife. Schmidt, a confident and self-assured man, boasts of his ability to win over any woman, turning a simple financial request into a hazardous game of power and seduction. The play delves into the complexities of human desire, the lengths people will go to for what they want, and whether, and how, the characters’ lives will unravel.
A Dream Realized
Director Elke Münch,who previously helmed the prosperous 2019 production of “A Strange Couple” with Frerichs and Hobein,expressed her enthusiasm for revisiting a collaboration with the pair. Sabine Ehlers served as assistant director, while Beate Schöne designed the stage, with Jens Koslowski handling construction. Fritz Böhm managed stage technology,Lisa Wilken oversaw props and equipment,and Petra Frerichs served as prompter. Christine Fromme was responsible for the actors’ makeup for the first time.
“The Loan” will premiere on Saturday,January 10th,at 8 p.m. in the Great Barn at Gut Sandbeck in Osterholz-Scharmbeck. Fifteen additional performances are scheduled through February 8th, with shows at 8 p.m. on various days of the week (excluding Mondays),4 p.m. on Sundays, and an additional performance on Saturday, January 31st, at 8 p.m.
