More than 1,400 out of 2,200 schools in the country have joined the program for funding sports and arts in schools, which can also support chess training, said the co-chairman of “Continuing the Change” (PP) Asen Vassilev during a round table for chess, organized by the Metropolitan Municipality, reported the press center of the PP.

The round table “The Importance of Chess for Children’s Development” was initiated by People’s Representative Neli Dimitrova and municipal councilors Tsvetelina Zarkin, Dimitar Shalafov, as well as Bogomil Petkov, member of the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian Sports Chess Federation and Kaloyan Peev, vice-republican champion in chess, which are from “Continuing the Change,” the announcement said.

The chairman of the Metropolitan Municipal Council Tsvetomir Petrov also took part in the meeting.

The purpose of the discussion was for teachers, chess club leaders and other stakeholders to discuss what policy actions can be taken at national and local level to make extra-curricular chess activities in schools attractive and accessible.

The participants in the meeting united around the need to support chess in schools by the state and the Municipality, providing funding and premises for children’s chess.

According to Asen Vasilev, the necessary funds can be provided if there is activity on the part of sports clubs and federations in chess, as well as school directors. The municipal councilors and MPs from “We continue the change” undertook to prepare the necessary legislative and regulatory documents, as well as municipal programs to promote this type of sport among adolescents, as according to scientific evidence it supports the intellectual development of children, teaches them patience and tolerance and reduces aggression.
