Over 5,000 migrants enter Spain from Morocco, with the army deployed

by time news

Time.news – Migrants continue to arrive in the Spanish enclave in Morocco of Ceuta, where on Monday there had been a record number of arrivals, 5,000 including about 1,500 minors in 24 hours. Several dozen sub-Saharan migrants have crossed the border barrier between Spain and Morocco in Melilla and they managed to enter the city in several groups.

In the early hours of the day they also entered from the sea, as had already happened yesterday.

Army deployed

The army has been deployed in the area to contain the hundreds of people waiting on the other side of the border.

Repatriations have already begun: Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Josè Luis Escrivá, said that they are being carried out “at a significant pace” and that the agreements with Morocco on migration “are very clear”.

According to the government, the massive arrival in the last few hours has nothing to do with Spain’s decision to allow the head of the Polisario Front, Brahim Gali, to be treated in a hospital in Logroño. Minister EscrivĂ  acknowledged that what happened in the last few hours “was not expected”, but explained that the phenomenon is linked to the pandemic and further poverty that has occurred in sub-Saharan countries.
