Their findings were striking: patients taking a GLP-1 analogue experienced nearly half the risk of dying within five years of their diagnosis compared to those who did not. Specifically, the mortality rate for GLP-1 analogue users was 15.5%, versus 37.1% for non-users.

“After adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), disease severity, and other health factors, GLP-1 agonist users still had a significantly lower risk of death,” the authors stated in a press communiqué, “suggesting a strong and independent protective effect.”

Obesity and Cancer Prognosis

The protective effect appeared particularly pronounced in individuals with a BMI greater than 35, categorized as severe obesity. This observation leads researchers to believe that drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may help mitigate the inflammatory and metabolic conditions that often worsen the prognosis for colon cancer patients.
