Pennsylvania Fall Foliage Report: Peak Colors Arrive in 11 Counties, Show Extended by Recent Rain
Pennsylvania’s vibrant fall foliage season is unfolding ahead of schedule, with 11 counties currently displaying peak color and much of the state anticipating peak conditions in the coming weeks. recent rainfall has been instrumental in prolonging what was initially forecast to be a brief display, offering extended opportunities for leaf peepers.
The Pennsylvania department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) initiated its weekly fall foliage reports a week earlier than usual due to unusually dry conditions earlier in the season. According to the latest report, issued on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the color show is expected to be both vibrant and fast-paced.
Currently, peak color has been reached in Blair, cambria, Clearfield, Indiana, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, and Wyoming counties. Northwestern and central pennsylvania are rapidly approaching peak conditions, while counties along the northern border, including somerset County, are still offering gorgeous views, though colors are beginning to fade.For areas further south, including Lancaster County, the foliage is just beginning to change.
“Recent rain is helping extend the show,” a DCNR spokesperson stated, highlighting the positive impact of the recent weather patterns.
To assist those planning a trip to witness the spectacle, state forest staff have provided recommendations for prime viewing locations:
- Blair, Cambria, and indiana counties: Babcock Picnic Area and along route 56 west of Windber.
- Clearfield county: Mud run Road to Tyler road within Moshannon State Forest.
- lackawanna,Luzerne,and Wyoming counties: Hiking trails on the Thornhurst Tract and Miller Mountain in Pinchot State Forest.
- Lycoming and Sullivan counties: The George Will ski trail in Tiadaghton State Forest, as well as sharp Top, slab Run Vista, and high Knob in Loyalsock State Forest.
- Monroe and Pike counties: Route 402, the Delaware Water Gap national Recreation Area, Promised Land State Park, Lake Wallenpaupack, and various areas within the Delaware State Forest, including Pecks pond, Rock Hill Pond, and the Thunder Swamp Trail system. Big Pocono State Park and the Laurel Run and Dixon Miller areas of Delaware State Forest are also recommended.
