The Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized a $1 billion loan to Constellation Energy Generation, LLC, to restart the Crane Clean Energy Center, a nuclear power plant located in Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania, signaling a renewed commitment to nuclear energy as a critical component of the nation’s energy infrastructure. The project aims to lower energy costs and bolster grid reliability in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Revitalizing Nuclear Capacity
The loan, facilitated through the DOE’s Loan Programs Office (LPO) and funded by the Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) Program established under the Working Families Tax Cut, will partially finance the restart of the 835-megawatt (MW) reactor. The plant ceased operations in 2019 but was preserved, allowing for the possibility of future reactivation. This marks the first project under the current administration to achieve both a conditional commitment and financial close concurrently.

Economic and Strategic Benefits
The Crane Restart project is projected to deliver significant economic benefits, including the creation of over 600 American jobs. Beyond job creation, the project is expected to lower electricity costs and strengthen the reliability of the power grid, particularly within the PJM Interconnection region. Once operational, pending approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the reactor will generate enough power for approximately 800,000 homes.
The initiative also aligns with broader strategic goals, including bolstering domestic manufacturing and maintaining a competitive edge in artificial intelligence (AI).
