Pakistan and Afghanistan Agree to Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes
Qatar brokered negotiations leading to an immediate ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan, following days of escalating violence that resulted in numerous casualties.
A fragile peace has been established between Pakistan and Afghanistan after a period of intense cross-border clashes. The agreement for an immediate ceasefire was reached through negotiations facilitated by Qatar’s foreign ministry on Sunday, bringing a temporary halt to hostilities that have claimed at least 10 lives in Pakistani airstrikes.
“During the negotiations, the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure lasting peace and stability between the two countries,” a statement from Qatar’s ministry of foreign affairs confirmed. The announcement follows a week of heightened tensions, beginning with violence that erupted on October 11.
The recent escalation began shortly after explosions rocked Kabul during a rare visit by Taliban foreign minister Amir Muttaqi to India. Following the incident, Taliban fighters initiated attacks along the southern border with Pakistan, prompting a swift response from Islamabad.
Pakistani security officials stated that the latest airstrikes targeted a militant group with ties to the Pakistani Taliban, alleging the attacks were in direct response to an assault on Pakistani paramilitary forces. Kabul had previously accused Islamabad of violating a 48-hour ceasefire, which had briefly paused the fighting that resulted in dozens of soldier and civilian deaths on both sides.
Negotiations took place in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday, with high-level delegations from both countries seeking to de-escalate the situation. Pakistan’s delegation was led by defence minister Khawaja Asif and intelligence chief general Asim Malik, while the Afghan side was headed by defence minister Mohammad Yaqoob, as confirmed by the Taliban.
The immediate future remains uncertain, but the ceasefire represents a crucial first step towards preventing further bloodshed and fostering dialogue between the two neighboring nations. The establishment of “mechanisms to ensure lasting peace and stability” will be critical in addressing the underlying issues driving the conflict.
. The success of these mechanisms will depend on the commitment of both sides to address the root causes of the instability and work towards a long-term solution.
