That environmental pressure triggered a sharp public contradiction over the weekend regarding the operational status of the Paksi Atomerőmű. While the facility faced severe cooling challenges, statements from political figures painted starkly different pictures of the plant’s immediate future, leaving the public to parse shifting updates.

Over the weekend, public anxiety peaked when Magyar Péter announced that the Paksi Atomerőmű would completely shut down. The announcement claimed that due to the further decrease of the Danube’s water level, the last-but-one production unit would be switched off at 1:30 AM, leaving the plant producing only 240 megawatts before total shutdown on Sunday, 44 years after its launch.

The state-run MVM issued no closure notices, and the plant’s 2-es blokk kept running into Tuesday evening.

Residents are asked to shift the use of high-draw household appliances away from the evening peak hours between 17:00 and 22:00.
