Palou & Penske Dominate: IndyCar at Barber Motorsports Park 2026 Preview

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES heads to Alabama this weekend for the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park, marking the first permanent road course of the 2026 season. Even as the track has historically favored Team Penske, the championship picture is already taking shape, and a surprising early challenge to defending champion Alex Palou is emerging.

Palou, who has dominated the series for the past three seasons, winning four championships enters the Barber race with a different dynamic than in years past. Last year, he secured five wins in the first six races, building an insurmountable lead that allowed him to clinch the title with two races remaining. This year, however, Palou has only one win through the first three races and trails Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood by 26 points (126-100) in the standings. The shift highlights the increasing competitiveness within the series and sets the stage for a potentially thrilling season.

Kirkwood’s strong start, punctuated by a win at the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington on March 15, demonstrates his ability to consistently contend for victories. He’s joined near the top of the standings by Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, winner of the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway on March 7, and Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, both tied with 93 points. The early season points battle suggests a wider range of contenders than in recent years, adding intrigue to the upcoming race at Barber.

Barber Motorsports Park has long been a stronghold for Team Penske, with eight wins in 15 races. Drivers like Helio Castroneves, Will Power, Simon Pagenaud, Newgarden, and Scott McLaughlin have all tasted victory at the 17-turn, 2.3-mile circuit. Newgarden attributes the team’s success to a consistent approach to car preparation. “It really doesn’t matter what car you’re on,” Newgarden said. “You can plug into any one of these cars, and they honestly experience the same. That’s the strength in the team, too. They’ve always tried to build it that way where they’re not too heavy in one area or the other. Not all teams do that. That’s very Penske-specific.”

Scott McLaughlin has found success at Barber Motorsports Park, winning races in 2023 and 2024 for Team Penske.

A Track Record of Consistency: Dixon at Barber

While Scott Dixon hasn’t secured a win at Barber Motorsports Park, his consistency at the track is remarkable. Despite never qualifying on pole, Dixon has an impressive record of nine podium finishes in 15 races – a 60 percent success rate. He finished second six times and third three times, consistently placing himself in contention. However, his recent results at Barber have been less impressive, finishing 13th and 26th in the past two years, a dip from his earlier dominance at the track.

Arrow McLaren’s Momentum

Arrow McLaren enters the Barber race with strong momentum, led by Pato O’Ward. O’Ward, a former winner at Barber (2022), has opened the season with three consecutive top-five finishes – fifth, fourth, and fifth – and is well-positioned to challenge for the championship. Teammate Christian Lundgaard has also shown promise at Barber, finishing sixth, fifth, and second in the past three races. O’Ward’s success at Barber extends to qualifying, where he secured the pole position in 2021 and boasts an average starting position of 3.6 in the last five races.

Remembering George Barber

This weekend’s event will also serve as a tribute to George Barber, the founder of Barber Motorsports Park and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, who passed away on February 15 at the age of 85. According to AL.com, Barber, an Auburn University graduate and Air National Guard veteran, transformed a former dairy farm into a world-renowned motorsports facility. The 880-acre campus, larger than Recent York City’s Central Park, is home to a museum boasting over 1,800 vehicles, including the world’s largest collection of motorcycles and Lotus race cars. Barber’s vision and dedication to motorsports have made Barber Motorsports Park a beloved destination for fans and drivers alike.
