Providing critical medical care and educational support, the Indonesian military is deepening its engagement with isolated communities in the Papua Highlands, bolstering both public health and social development.
The Indonesian military has significantly expanded its door-to-door medical outreach program in the pirime Subdistrict of Lanny Jaya District, Papua Highlands, focusing on delivering urgent care to residents of remote villages. The initiative, led by Task Force Commander Lt. Col. Amar Supratman, aims to address the important healthcare disparities faced by communities with limited access to medical facilities. According to a statement released Sunday, health personnel from the Pirime Post are proactively visiting individuals in need, such as Yotan from Bagumbuk Village, who required immediate medical attention.
Bridging the Healthcare Gap
The expanded medical program underscores the military’s commitment to providing essential services in challenging terrain. Sgt.Didik, the medical officer at the Pirime Post, has been instrumental in delivering treatment directly to villagers. “Our health program is ready to serve anytime residents need assistance,” Lt. Col. Supratman affirmed, highlighting the program’s responsiveness to community needs. This mobile service is part of a larger humanitarian effort undertaken by the Indonesian military across border and interior regions of Papua, designed to improve living conditions and foster stronger relationships with local populations.
The free medical treatment is especially vital in easing the financial burden on residents in these remote highland areas. “We hope this can lighten hardships and support villagers facing health challenges,” Supratman added. Local resident Julia expressed her gratitude for the free medicine and care provided by the Pirime Post soldiers for her husband, demonstrating the tangible impact of the program.
Beyond healthcare: Supporting Spiritual development
The military’s outreach extends beyond physical health, recognizing the importance of holistic community support. in response to a critical need,Indonesian military personnel stationed in the highlands are also providing Quran reading lessons to Muslim children in remote Pirime Village. This initiative addresses the absence of dedicated religious teachers in the area and aims to support the spiritual development of the community’s youth.
Approximately seven elementary school students are currently participating in these informal classes, held at the Pirime Post of Infantry Battalion (Yonif) 511/DY, which is part of the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea Border Security Task Force. “In these remote areas, there are no religious teachers, and Muslims are a minority,” Supratman explained in a statement published in October.”Our personnel are offering what religious education they can provide.”
A Multifaceted approach to Community Welfare
The Indonesian military’s activities in Papua reflect an evolving role that extends beyond traditional security concerns. According to reports, troops are increasingly expected to act as problem-solvers and respond to the daily challenges faced by local communities, while together fulfilling their primary mission of protecting national sovereignty and maintaining public safety.
The provinces of Papua and West papua, sharing land and sea borders with Papua New Guinea, hold significant geopolitical and strategic importance for Indonesia. Despite ongoing security threats from armed separatist groups, the military continues to prioritize community welfare through service-oriented programs. This multifaceted approach demonstrates a commitment to building trust and fostering stability in a complex and sensitive region.
