Credelio Expands Lyme Disease & Tick Protection with Label Updates
Table of Contents
Protecting pets from the growing threat of tick-borne illnesses just got easier. Expanded labels for both Credelio Quattro and Credelio, both containing the active ingredient lotilaner, now include protection against Lyme disease and emerging tick species, following promising efficacy data.
A recent study published in Parasites and Vectors demonstrated 100% efficacy of lotilaner against the longhorned tick within 48 hours of infestation, and throughout the month-long study period. This breakthrough has led to the expanded indication for both products to treat and control infestations of this increasingly problematic tick.
The Rising Threat of Ticks and Lyme Disease
The longhorned tick presents a unique public health challenge due to its reproductive capabilities. According to a company release, these ticks can quickly establish large populations, as a single female can reproduce without a mate, leading to thousands of offspring. Beyond the longhorned tick, lotilaner has proven highly effective against the black-legged tick, a primary vector for Lyme disease.
The prevalence of lyme disease in dogs is on the rise. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) reported 530,685 cases in dogs across the United States in 2024, with 1 in 20 dogs testing positive for infection. This represents a significant increase from the 465,721 cases reported in 2023, where 1 in 30 dogs tested positive.
