Parma Heights, Ohio – Valentine’s Day arrived a little early for seven couples in Parma Heights, who renewed their wedding vows in a heartwarming ceremony at the city’s senior center on Friday, February 13. The event, organized by the city and spearheaded by Mayor Marie Gallo, offered a chance for long-married pairs to reaffirm their commitment to one another.

“In celebration of Valentine’s Day and the spirit of love, we were delighted to offer our seniors the opportunity to renew their commitment to one another,” Mayor Gallo said in a statement. The ceremony was witnessed by approximately 70 senior center members and guests, creating a festive atmosphere under a backdrop of red, pink, and white balloons.

Among the couples celebrating their enduring love were Donna and Stephen Andrassy, married for 36 years; Carmen and Ken Billings, together for 24 years; and Mary and Robert Gruhn, who have shared 52 years of marriage. Also renewing their vows were Connie and Patrick Hendricks (18 years), Mary and Dave Pellas (25 years), Robert and Debra Redden (8 years), and Kathy and Jim Harry (20 years). The event highlighted the diverse tapestry of long-lasting relationships within the Parma Heights community.

Secrets to a Lasting Union

As part of the ceremony, the couples were asked to share their insights into the keys to a successful marriage. Mary Gruhn emphasized the importance of upholding the vows made on their wedding day. Her husband, Robert, offered a more pragmatic perspective: “In one ear and out the other. Don’t argue.” This lighthearted exchange underscored the blend of commitment and compromise often found in long-term partnerships.

Ken Billings, who will celebrate his 25th anniversary with his wife, Carmen, in June, shared a simple yet profound sentiment: “A kiss in the morning when leaving the house and one at night.” This small gesture of affection, he believes, has been a cornerstone of their enduring connection.

A Year in the Making

The event was the culmination of a year’s worth of planning, according to Trish James, Administrator of the Parma Heights Senior Center. James expressed her delight with the turnout and the positive response from the community. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” she said. “This little event has been a year in the making. We started talking about doing it right after last Valentine’s Day.”

James also acknowledged the crucial role played by the center’s volunteers and employees in bringing the ceremony to fruition. “It could not have happened without every single volunteer and employee who works at the center,” she added, highlighting the collaborative spirit that made the event possible.
