The shipping company MSC wants to join the port logistics provider HHLA. There is a lot of protest against this. MSC boss Toft and Senator for Economic Affairs Leonhard are campaigning to see the opportunities for Hamburg.

The major shipping company MSC is offering the Port of Hamburg great growth opportunities following its planned entry into the port logistics provider HHLA. “We plan to write a growth story here. We will bring additional throughput volumes to Hamburg, and we will also bring in our experience, investments and innovative strength,” said MSC boss Soren Toft to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.

At the same time, the CEO of the world’s largest container shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), expressed understanding for the criticism that is often expressed in Hamburg with regard to the planned entry into the operating company HHLA: “Of course, HHLA is a special company, with a special history and significance for Hamburg. It is clear and good that such a step is controversially discussed.”

Hamburg and MSC announced in mid-September that the Swiss company would join HHLA. The city currently holds around 69 percent of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA). In the future, this will be managed as a joint venture, with the city holding 50.1 percent and MSC 49.9 percent of the shares. Numerous HHLA employees and the Verdi union, among others, are strictly against the deal.

According to the information, HHLA shareholders will receive a concrete purchase offer from MSC in a few days. The commitment to joint investments will be part of this offer, said Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs Melanie Leonhard in a joint FAZ interview with the MSC boss. “We have also agreed that we will specify the short, medium and long-term investment planning every three, five, ten years,” said the SPD politician.

She pointed out that the perspective should extend far beyond Hamburg: “It is important that HHLA is much more than the port company in Hamburg. There are development opportunities, for example in the Baltics and the Mediterranean. And HHLA is really strong in intermodal transport, which has a stabilizing effect in difficult economic times. Strengthening all of this is a task for the future.”

At the weekend, the Hamburg CDU state leader Dennis Thering criticized the behavior of the Hamburg state government. He described the Senate as a “chaos force.” When it comes to Hamburg as a business location, the SPD and the Greens are “extremely bungling,” said the 39-year-old. For example, the planned entry of the shipping company MSC into the port logistics company HHLA was a cloak and dagger operation, said Thering. Without the participation of the citizens, without the participation of the public, without the participation of important players in the port of Hamburg, parts of HHLA were sold off to the shipping company MSC.
