Party funding: 1.5 billion public subsidy to BR, FCBE, LD and UP parties

The State has just allocated to political parties with elected politicians the public subsidy intended to finance their activities. The Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) in charge of the distribution, handed over the checks to the representatives of the eligible political formations, this May 15 in Cotonou.

The funds allocated to the representative parties cover the first two quarters of the year 2023. This public subsidy covers the first two quarters of the year 2023. In addition to the three parties, the BR, the FCBE and the UP, which already benefited from the funding, the party Les Démocrates, which recently entered parliament after the legislative elections, also receives a share of this envelope.

According to the law on the public financing of political parties, this subsidy aims in particular to finance the parties, promote their political program, participate in electoral consultations, train their militants, as well as ensure the civic and political education of their members and citizens.

The political parties eligible for the public subsidy are those which are the most representative according to the results of the elections. Thus, the distribution of funds is based 60% on the number of elected municipal parties and 40% on the number of deputies.

Parties receiving public funding are required to submit their financial statements to the Court of Auditors no later than April 30 of each year, under penalty of automatically losing the benefit of funding for the current year.
