Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will participate in the informal CIS summit in St. Petersburg for the first time after the Nagorno-Karabakh events, RIA Novosti writes.
It is noted that Yerevan and Baku have not yet announced plans to hold a bilateral meeting of politicians within the framework of the event.
To remind, the press service of the RA government announced earlier today that the RA Prime Minister left for St. Petersburg on a two-day working visit.
The last time Pashinyan and Aliyev met on July 15 in Brussels, this was their fifth meeting this year.
In February, the negotiations between them took place within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, with the participation of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In May, Pashinyan and Aliyev met with the head of the European Council Charles Michel and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Brussels and Moscow. In June, Charles Michel, as well as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron joined the talks between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Moldova.
The meetings of the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan in Granada and Brussels did not take place this fall, despite their preparation and agreements reached.
The media reports that after the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan launched a military operation on September 19, as a result of which Aliyev announced that “the republic has restored its territorial integrity.” “More than 100,000 residents left Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia in a few days,” writes the media.
Last year, Yerevan and Baku started discussing the peace treaty with the mediation of Russia, the USA and the European Union. At the end of May this year, Pashinyan said that Armenia is ready to recognize the sovereignty of Azerbaijan.
According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan and Armenia can sign a peace treaty by the end of the year if Yerevan’s position does not change.
