Pastor Evandro José Matteussi, from the God is Love Church, passed away on the 5th. The religious leader was surprised by a jararaca snake when he was in an area close to his residence, in the municipality of Agrolândia, Alto Vale, in Santa Catarina.
Evandro, who was 42 years old, was bitten by the jararaca and soon after sought hospital care, still in Adrolândia, where he received antivenom. However, two days after the bite, he had a seizure and had to be taken to the Alto Vale Regional Hospital, in Rio do Sul.
During treatment, doctors identified a clot in the pastor’s brain. Although it is not common, pit viper venom can cause this type of reaction, according to biologist and herpetologist Alex Giordano Bergmann.
“This is not common, but in some cases, blood vessels may rupture and the person may experience internal bleeding, such as in the brain, caused by the jararaca venom,” these the expert to NSC Total.
Death
Pastor Evandro, who led a branch of the Deus é Amor Church in Braço do Trombudo, also in Alto Vale, underwent surgery to attempt to remove the clot, but was unable to survive the consequences and subsequently died.
“It seems that, after the surgery, the snake’s venom returned ‘more strongly’ to his body,” said the pastor’s sister, Marilda Matteussi Pacher, according to information from the G1 portal.
After Evandro’s death, his family issued a statement in gratitude for the prayers and efforts of the healthcare team who tried to save the religious man’s life.
“We are grateful to the medical team at the Regional Hospital who, with lots of love, welcomed our brother and did everything they could. And his family also thanks all the people who prayed for him from everywhere,” they said.
According to information from the Butantan Institute, cases of accidents involving jararacas account for 69.3% in Brazil. The jararaca is a species that can be found from Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, being predominant in the Atlantic Forest regions.
