Pasuruan Boy Killer Suspect Linked to Depression

Pasuruan, East Java – A 7-year-old boy, Haidar Mustofa, died tragically after being assaulted by his neighbor, Afandi, 27, in Sambisirah Village, Wonorejo District, on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025. The motive behind the attack appears to stem from the perpetrator’s personal struggles, including a prolonged period of unemployment and a recent separation from his wife.

Alleged Depression Fueled Attack on Child

The suspect, Afandi, reportedly showed signs of depression due to joblessness and marital issues, according to local officials.

The Head of Sambisirah Village, Abdur Rohim, stated that Afandi had no prior issues with the victim’s family. “The possibility of depression because it does not have a job. Several times ask for a job, to me,” Rohim said on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025. He added that Afandi’s psychological state had deteriorated since separating from his wife around Eid al-Fitr.

Afandi, who now resides with his parents and siblings, was married but is currently separated.

Police Investigating Perpetrator’s Mental State

The Pasuruan Police have taken Afandi into custody for examination. Iptu Joko Suseno, Head of Public Relations for the Pasuruan Police, confirmed that the investigation includes assessing the perpetrator’s mental condition with the assistance of a psychiatrist team.

The young victim was reportedly beaten while playing, suffering severe head injuries. Despite receiving medical attention at a hospital, Haidar Mustofa’s life could not be saved.
