Australia Retains the Ashes: A Legacy Forged in Adelaide, Eyes Now Turn to 2027

Australia has retained the Ashes after securing a series win, a feat accomplished despite a longer-than-expected battle on the fifth day in Adelaide. The victory extends their hold on the iconic urn for another year and a half, until the next contest unfolds on English soil. For captain Pat Cummins, this marks a historic third consecutive Ashes series without relinquishing the trophy, placing him in esteemed company alongside Joe Darling, Don Bradman, Richie Benaud, Mike Brearley, Allan Border, and Mark Taylor.

The circumstances surrounding the win were notable, particularly with Steve Smith sidelined for the third Test. Smith had previously captained the first two victories in Cummins’ absence, avoiding a scenario where the full-time captain might appear to capitalize on a stand-in’s success. Such situations, as seen with Adam Gilchrist leading two wins for a Ricky Ponting-led team in 2004, can raise questions of credit and contribution.

Both Cummins and Smith have demonstrably contributed to the current result, mirroring their combined impact over a five-series streak of Ashes dominance dating back to Smith’s batting brilliance in 2017-18. This run is a testament to Australian resilience, surpassed by only three longer periods of Ashes possession: six series between 1934 and 1950-51, six between 1958-59 and 1968, and an impressive eight series spanning 1989 to 2002-03.

Despite the home success, a significant challenge remains: securing a series win in England. Australia has twice retained the trophy on English soil with 2-2 draws, losing the crucial fifth Test at The Oval. While official messaging emphasizes the importance of retaining the urn, the lack of an outright victory in England continues to frustrate veteran players.

Looking ahead to 2027, Cummins, who will be 34, has the opportunity to equal Bradman’s record of four successful Ashes defenses as captain. Mitchell Starc, at 37, is also expected to remain a key force, having dominated the recent series with 22 wickets at an average of 17.

However, injury concerns loom for Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, who will be 36 and 39 respectively. Despite recent setbacks, Hazlewood has demonstrated strong form, and Lyon’s spin bowling remains a unique asset for the Australian side – currently unmatched by any other spinner in the country. Smith, turning 38 shortly before the next series, presents a more uncertain prospect, with his commitment to the game subject to speculation.

The pre-series critiques of Australia as a “Dad’s Army” proved partially accurate. Injuries plagued the team, with Cummins and Hazlewood sidelined before the first ball, Lyon suffering a hamstring injury, and Smith missing the Adelaide Test. Further compounding concerns, Usman Khawaja struggled with fielding due to physical limitations, and Scott Boland will be 38 by the next series. The reserve seamers lack experience, leaving Cameron Green as the team’s sole player in his twenties, yet he is currently short on runs.

Despite these challenges, the current team has achieved victory in near-record time. The winning span of 11 playing days matches the pace of previous Australian triumphs, trailing only Warwick Armstrong’s team of 1921, who won the Ashes in eight days of play – though those Tests were shorter in duration. This year’s win, completed in 786.3 overs, was faster than Armstrong’s team (791.5 overs) and Steve Waugh’s 2002-03 side (896.4 overs), surpassed only by Waugh’s 2001 tour of England (665.1 overs).

Players like Smith and Khawaja have been involved in Ashes cricket since 2010 and 2011, respectively, while Starc and Lyon joined the fray in 2013 and Hazlewood in 2015. Cummins, despite joining the team later in 2017-18, has become a consistent presence, leading the team without experiencing defeat. These players have already cemented their legacies, but the allure of 2027 remains.

The next adventure beckons, a glittering prospect on the horizon. It will be interesting to see who is drawn by its light.
