Five Hikers Die in Chile’s Torres del Paine as Extreme Storm Batters Region

A devastating storm in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park claimed the lives of five hikers, including a woman from the United Kingdom, after the group was caught in extreme weather conditions and winds exceeding 120 mph. The tragedy unfolded on Monday, November 17, amidst heavy snowfall and treacherous conditions on the famed Paine Massif Circuit, also known as the O Circuit.

British Woman Among the Victims

Victoria Bond, a resident of the South West of England and a public relations professional with the Isles of Scilly Tourist Information Centre, was identified as one of those who perished. Bond was also actively involved with Cornwall’s Roseland Festival. She was reportedly trekking the challenging O Circuit when the sudden and severe weather system descended upon the region.

The other victims included Cristina Calvillo Tovar and Julian García Pimentel from Mexico, and Nadine Lichey and Andreas Von Pein from Germany.

Distress Signal from Los Perros Camp

The emergency began to unfold when a visitor, identified only as Arab Ginnett, posted a desperate plea for help on social media. “We are at Los Perros camp in Torres del Paine,” the post read. “People climbed the John Gardner earlier today, and the weather has turned very bad. We are snowed in, and people are still out on the pass. Very strong wind >120 mph.”

Ginnett’s message continued, detailing the ongoing rescue efforts and the dire situation facing those still missing. “We believe at least five people haven’t been found, one is being rescued now, but she is very unresponsive. They are on the side between Los Perros and the top of the pass,” he stated. “We need urgent help – climbers and rescuers run the risk of dying based on our current situation.” The Daily Express subsequently reported on Ginnett’s urgent call for assistance.

Harrowing Trek and Fond Memories

Friends of Victoria Bond have begun sharing memories of her adventurous spirit. A video posted by a friend, Christian, captured the initial challenges of their trek, showcasing heavy rain, flooded trails, and difficult river crossings encountered on the first day of their journey.

Official Response and Condolences

Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font lauded the “tireless” efforts of the search and rescue teams who operated in extreme conditions, with winds reaching 118 mph. He extended his deepest condolences to the families of all five victims.

A representative for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed they are providing support to the family of the British woman who died and are in close contact with local authorities in Chile.

The loss of Victoria Bond is being deeply felt in Cornwall, where she was a well-known figure through her work promoting tourism and local cultural events.
