Patrick Mahomes Suffers ACL Tear, Ending Chiefs’ Playoff Hopes

The Kansas City Chiefs’ season took a devastating turn Sunday as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a torn ACL in his left knee during a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, effectively ending the team’s postseason aspirations and sidelining the two-time MVP until at least 2026.

The injury, occurring in the waning seconds of the game, represents the most significant setback in Mahomes’ nine-year career, a period defined by three Super Bowl titles and consistent AFC championship contention. The Chiefs will miss the playoffs this year, marking a stark contrast to their recent dominance.

“Don’t know why this had to happen,” Mahomes posted on social media prior to the official diagnosis. “And not going to lie it hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”

The incident unfolded as Mahomes scrambled toward the sideline with under two minutes remaining, attempting to extend the drive. He was tackled by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, immediately clutching his left knee as trainers rushed to his aid. After a brief evaluation in the sideline injury tent, Mahomes limped toward the locker room with a towel covering his head.

According to a team spokesperson, Mahomes will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury and determine the best course of treatment, including potential surgical options.

Gardner Minshew replaced Mahomes, completing three consecutive passes to briefly reignite the Chiefs’ hopes. However, an interception thrown to Derwin James with 14 seconds left sealed the Chargers’ victory and the Chiefs’ fate.

“I hate the situation. I hate that I couldn’t deliver the win and keep our hopes alive,” Minshew stated.

The loss, coupled with wins by Jacksonville, Buffalo, and Houston, officially eliminated the defending AFC champions from playoff contention. A senior team member acknowledged the frustration, stating, “It’s very frustrating, man. It’s been hard to watch for Pat, a dude that puts so much into it. I’ve never seen someone give so much of themselves to the team. I have confidence in him and his ability to come back better than ever.”

A Cascade of Injuries Plagued the Chiefs

Mahomes’ injury was not an isolated incident, but rather the latest in a series of setbacks that decimated the Chiefs’ offense. The team entered the game with a depleted offensive line, including left tackle Josh Simmons on injured reserve with a fractured wrist, backup Wanya Morris sidelined with a knee injury, right tackle Trey Smith inactive due to an ankle injury, and right tackle Jawaan Taylor battling a triceps injury.

During the game, backup right tackle Jaylon Moore also sustained a knee injury, forcing the Chiefs to rely on journeyman Esa Pole and Chukwuebuka Godrick – an international pathway player with no prior NFL experience – to protect their quarterback.

Further compounding the issues, wide receivers Marquise Brown was inactive due to a family matter, and Tyquan Thornton was evaluated for a concussion after a hard hit. Xavier Worthy also spent time in concussion protocol.

The defensive unit was similarly impacted, beginning the game without Trent McDuffie due to a knee injury. Linebacker Nick Bolton, defensive tackle Chris Jones, and cornerback Jaylen Watson all briefly left the game with injuries, though they later returned.

“We have a lot of guys who are very resilient in our locker room,” said Jones. “We all knew what was at stake. We all wanted to be part of this game. We were looking forward to it. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the outcome we hoped for, but everyone battled.”

Mahomes finished the game with 189 passing yards and one interception. The Chiefs now face an uncertain future as they navigate the offseason and prepare for a 2026 return for their star quarterback.
