A dedicated football lifer, Paul Wiggin, passed away on Friday at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of over four decades with the Minnesota Vikings organization.
Few individuals possessed the same unwavering passion for the game as Paul Wiggin. He remained deeply involved in football throughout his life, driven by a commitment to the sport that lasted until his final days.
Wiggin spent more than 40 years with the Vikings, holding a diverse range of positions within the franchise. Team owners Mark and Zygi Wilf reflected on their experience with Wiggin, stating, “We had the honor of meeting Paul when we purchased the team in 2005. It quickly became clear how much he loved the Minnesota Vikings. He captivated staff members and us with his stories about the history of the franchise and the NFL. He cared about players, coaches and staff, and he wanted nothing more than to win a Super Bowl for Vikings fans.”
Wiggin’s football journey began as a player with the Cleveland Browns before transitioning into coaching. He honed his skills with the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and New Orleans Saints, ultimately joining the Vikings in 1985 under the guidance of legendary head coach Bud Grant.
As the defensive line coach, Wiggin played a pivotal role in developing some of the Vikings’ most celebrated players. He worked closely with Hall of Fame defensive end Chris Doleman and Hall of Fame defensive tackle John Randle, shaping their careers and contributing to their success. Randle described Wiggin as “The original guru,” adding, “He had a quiet way of imparting his knowledge and wisdom in a way that changed the game. He never raised his voice or spoke in harsh words. His humble leadership pushed you to be a better player and a better man.”
After a decade dedicated to coaching the defensive line, Wiggin transitioned to a role in the Vikings’ front office, where he remained a constant presence within the organization. Rob Brzezinski, executive vice president of football operations, lauded Wiggin as “A legend as a person, player, coach, and personnel executive. For 40 years, he demonstrated an incredible dedication to the Vikings, a team he truly loved.”
Wiggin’s passing marks the end of an era for the Minnesota Vikings, a testament to a life devoted to the game he cherished.
