Peacemaker Season 2: Trailer Drops, New Cast & DCU Canon Confirmed

A full trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Peacemaker debuted at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, signaling the continuation of James Gunn’s critically acclaimed series. The show, a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, is poised to delve deeper into the complex world of Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker.

The first season, comprised of eight episodes, unfolded five months following the events of The Suicide Squad. The narrative centered on Peacemaker—played by John Cena—who, having narrowly escaped a fatal shooting, was recruited by the U.S. government for a clandestine operation known as Project Butterfly. This mission brought him into contact with a diverse and unconventional team, including A.R.G.U.S. agent John Economos (Steve Agee), NSA agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and newcomer Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), all under the leadership of the enigmatic Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji).

Project Butterfly ultimately revealed itself as a desperate attempt to safeguard Earth from an alien species of parasitic, butterfly-like creatures capable of inhabiting human bodies. Despite facing overwhelming odds and sustaining significant injuries, the team ultimately prevailed in a dramatic showdown at a remote ranch.

Season 2 will see the return of Cena, Brooks, Holland, Agee, and Fred Stroma, alongside Nhut Lee as Judomaster and, of course, Eagly. Robert Patrick will reprise his role as Chris’s father, Auggie. Joining the cast are Frank Grillo as Rick Flagg Sr., who previously voiced the character in Creature Commandos and now leads A.R.G.U.S. driven by vengeance for his son’s death; Tim Meadows as A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury; Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux; and Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, described as Eagly’s formidable “nemesis.”

Notably, the events of Season 1 transpired within the framework of the former DCEU, while Season 2 will be firmly situated within the newly established DCU. However, Gunn has clarified that the prior events remain “canon,” with the exception of cameos featuring members of the DCEU Justice League. The series is a key component of Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” slate, and Cena’s Peacemaker even made a brief appearance in Superman.

According to an official synopsis, the upcoming season will explore Chris’s internal struggle “to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost.” This suggests a deeper exploration of the character’s motivations and a continuation of the series’ signature blend of action, humor, and emotional depth.
