A Retrospective of Sapporo Through the Eyes of Aya Ikuemi
Fans of Japanese manga and those seeking a deeper connection to the cultural landscape of Hokkaido will find much to appreciate in “Ikuemi Ayahara’s slash and burn story Our Stories -from Sapporo-.” This exhibition showcases the original artwork of Aya Ikuemi, a cartoonist with over four decades dedicated to capturing the essence of Sapporo. The exhibition, featuring more than 100 original paintings, delves into works deeply rooted in the city’s scenery, dialect, and unique atmosphere.
“The expression politely depicts the emotions of the characters as if they were going about their everyday lives,” a representative stated, highlighting the artist’s ability to resonate with readers through relatable portrayals of daily life. Beyond the finished artwork, the exhibition offers a glimpse into Ikuemi’s creative process, tracing her journey to prominence and providing insight into the meticulous detail behind each delicate line and facial expression.
Pingu and Penguins: A Celebration of Love at AOAO SAPPORO
Sapporo’s urban aquarium, AOAO SAPPORO, is embracing the winter season with a special collaboration celebrating the 45th anniversary of the globally recognized character, Pingu. “PINGU™×AOAO SAPPORO SWEET AQUARIUM Winter, Suizokukan of Love” promises a unique experience centered around the theme of “love,” perfectly complementing the snow-covered landscape of Sapporo.
Visitors will have the opportunity to observe Kitai watobi penguins during their courtship and breeding season, gaining a deeper understanding of their ecology and the importance of family, love, and friendship. The event will also feature engaging stamp rallies and immersive experiences designed to envelop attendees in Pingu’s charming world.
