Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan Unite in First Look at ‘Peaky Blinders’ Film

A new chapter in the saga of the Shelby family is on the horizon, with Cillian Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby and joined by Barry Keoghan in the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. The film offers a glimpse into a story set against the backdrop of World War II.

The forthcoming movie serves as a continuation of the critically acclaimed BBC drama, which captivated audiences with its depiction of the Birmingham crime family’s rise to power. The series spanned from the end of World War I through the end of Prohibition in the United States, becoming a global phenomenon thanks to its compelling characters and gritty realism.

Tommy Shelby’s Return and Identity Crisis

The 70-second trailer reveals Tommy Shelby driven back from a self-imposed exile, grappling with his past and questioning his very identity. A voiceover poses the central question: “whatever happened to Tommy Shelby? The famous gypsy gangster.” Murphy’s character responds with a stark declaration: “I’m not that man any more,” hinting at a profound transformation.

the teaser shows Shelby walking with his head down, still sporting his signature bakerboy cap, as a woman’s voice urges, “tommy, you’ve got to come back.” This suggests a reluctant return to the life he attempted to leave behind, potentially driven by external forces or internal demons.

Keoghan Joins the Shelby Universe

Viewers are also given a first look at Keoghan’s character, seen wearing a white vest top and displaying prominent tattoos. His role remains shrouded in mystery, but his inclusion adds another layer of intrigue to the already complex narrative.Keoghan, known for his roles in Saltburn and Dune, brings a fresh dynamic to the Peaky Blinders universe.

Familiar Faces and New Additions

Alongside Murphy and Keoghan, several returning cast members will reprise their roles, including Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, Stephen Graham as union convener Hayden Stagg, and Packy Lee as Tommy’s friend Johnny Dogs. The film also welcomes new additions to the cast, such as Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs).

Beyond the Film: A New Generation of Shelbys

The Peaky blinders universe is expanding beyond the film. In October, the BBC announced plans for two new series focusing on a “new generation of Shelbys,” set in 1953. These spin-off series will be filmed at Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, continuing the show’s connection to its original setting.

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, has written the film and is also slated to pen the next installment in the James bond franchise. Tom Harper directed The Immortal Man. Murphy will return as an executive producer, though it remains unconfirmed weather he will reprise his leading role in the spin-off series.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man will premiere in cinemas on March 6th, 2025, and will be available on Netflix starting March 20th, 2025. The enduring popularity of Peaky Blinders-which began on BBC Two in 2013 before moving to BBC One in 2019 after a Bafta win-has not only captivated audiences but also sparked a resurgence in the popularity of the flat cap, a signature accessory of the Shelby family. The series launched the careers of Murphy, Tom hardy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and the late Helen McCrory to international acclaim.
