Last Sunday, October 13, the films “Baby” and “Malu”, by directors Marcelo Caetano and Pedro Freire – both guest professors of the International Film Academy (AIC), received the main awards of Première Brasil at the Rio Festival 2024.
The awards ceremony took place at the Cine Odeon and the big winners of the evening jointly won the award for best film: “Baby”, the Cannes-winning film by Marcelo Caetano, and “Malu”, by Pedro Freire. Both films were awarded four times during the evening in various categories.
“Baby”, by Marcelo Caetano, won the categories Best Artistic Direction (Thales Junqueira), Best Actor (João Pedro Mariano) and Best Fiction Feature Film. The film tells the story of Wellington (João Pedro Mariano), who, shortly after being released from a youth detention center, finds himself adrift on the streets of São Paulo. During a visit to a porn cinema, he meets the prostitute Ronaldo (Ricardo Teodoro), with whom he begins to live a relationship full of conflicts, between exploitation and protection, jealousy and complicity.
“Malu”, by Pedro Freire, won in the categories Best Actress (Yara de Novaes), Best Supporting Actress (double prize) for Carol Duarte and Juliana Carneiro da Cunha, Best Screenplay and Best Fiction Feature Film. The film tells the story of Malu, a middle-aged woman with a glorious past, who finds herself trapped in existential chaos. The complex relationship with the conservative mother and her now adult daughter makes the crisis even more acute, with moments of affection and joy between the three. A portrait of a woman searching for the best version of herself.
