Penang Landslide Kills 73-Year-Old Doctor Dr Wong Kar Lin

A 73-year-old doctor in Penang was killed on October 25, when a hillside landslide crashed into his Paya Terubong home while he was making breakfast.

Landslide Strikes Paya Terubong Home During Breakfast

The fatal incident occurred at about 8:36 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, when heavy overnight rainfall triggered a sudden collapse of soil, rocks, and concrete from the hillside behind Taman Seri Rambai. Dr Wong Kar Lin, 73, was preparing breakfast on the ground floor when the kitchen was buried by the debris.

His 68-year-old wife, Chang Mei Nuo, and his elderly mother-in-law, Wong Poh Lim, were upstairs at the time and managed to escape unharmed. Chang and her 35-year-old son were inside the house when the disaster struck, according to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department. Emergency responders arrived within two minutes of the distress call, but the victim was already pinned beneath the collapsed structure.

Medical personnel confirmed his death at 9:10 a.m., and firefighters spent nearly three hours extracting his body from the rubble, recovering him at around 11:20 a.m.

City Council Halts Hillside Construction Following Fatal Collapse

Following the disaster, Penang Island City Council Mayor Datuk Rajendran Anthony inspected the site behind the residential property. The council issued an immediate stop-work order to the developer in charge of an ongoing road construction project that had been underway on the slope for about one and a half years. Authorities also advised residents of five nearby homes to evacuate temporarily due to safety risks posed by the unstable terrain, while the Land and Mines Office coordinated temporary housing.

Environmental advocates quickly pointed to the dangers of extensive development in the region. Meenakshi Raman, president of Sahabat Alam Malaysia, stated that the tragedy validated repeated warnings from local residents and non-governmental organizations regarding major hill-cutting works in the area.

Secret Good Deeds Revealed at the Cathedral Wake

Beyond his professional life as an occupational health doctor, Wong maintained a quiet reputation for charity that surprised even those closest to him. At his wake two days after the tragedy at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, patients and colleagues shared accounts of his generosity.

Among them was Azly Ahmad, a 40-year-old safety and health officer who had known Wong as an occupational health colleague for over 15 years. Azly and his wife, Eliana Abdullah, had struggled to conceive for a decade before turning to Wong for guidance in 2021. Wong recommended a fertility method that resulted in a successful pregnancy a year later, keeping the assistance entirely confidential from his own wife.

Azly’s three-year-old son, Anaqy—whom Wong helped bring into the world—attended the wake, looking through the glass panel of the coffin and calling the late physician Gong Gong or grandfather.

He doesn’t know that the grandfather he loves wasn’t just sleeping, but has gone forever, said Azly Ahmad, reflecting on the profound bond his family shared with the physician.

Decades of Quiet Service Remembered by Colleagues

Longtime friend Dr Lek-Lim Chan, a Kuching-based instructor in fertility methods, noted that Wong frequently assisted couples struggling to conceive without charging fees beyond the cost of blood tests. Chan described him as exceptionally humble, continuing his volunteer fertility work and quiet assistance to elderly residents in care homes well into his 70s.

He is a very humble doctor, Chan said, adding that his late colleague found immense fulfillment in helping others.
