Thai Political Activist Condemns People’s Party Consideration of Anutin Charnwirakul for Prime Minister

A political activist known as “Penguin” has issued a scathing open letter condemning the People’s Party’s potential support for anutin Charnwirakul, leader of the Phuea Thai party, in a vote for prime minister scheduled for September 3, 2025. The letter, posted on Facebook, warns of a betrayal of democratic principles and urges party members to reconsider their position.

The activist, identified as Mr. Prit Chiwarak, addressed the open letter to the Executive Committee of the People’s Party and members of the House of Representatives representing the party. He expressed deep concern over reports that the People’s party is considering supporting Charnwirakul’s bid for the premiership.

“Just heard the news that the People’s Party decided to raise his hand to support Mr. Anutin Charnwirakul… up to the prime minister,” Chiwarak wrote. He acknowledged the tough position facing the party, suggesting members may feel pressured to choose between past grievances wiht the Phuea Thai party and the pragmatic need for a governing coalition.

Did you know?– Thailand’s political landscape has been marked by frequent coups and periods of political instability as the 1930s. The contry has experienced numerous changes in government and constitution.

However, Chiwarak vehemently argued against any collaboration with Charnwirakul and the Phuea Thai party. he characterized supporting the Phuea Thai party as a perilous gamble, warning it would grant them unfettered access to state resources and ultimately lead to a betrayal of the People’s Party and the broader democratic movement. “To support the Phuea Thai party is like a tiger wing,” he stated. “Will make the Pride Thai Party fully access to state and government resources as prime minister.Ultimately after he raised their hands, they will betray you and use the power and resources to attack you, including attacking the democratic movement.”

Pro tip:– Coalition governments are common in parliamentary systems. They require compromise and negotiation between parties with differing ideologies to form a majority.

The activist further asserted that supporting a figure he considers an “enemy of democracy” would fundamentally compromise the people’s Party’s core values. He cautioned against allowing a desire for revenge against those who previously betrayed them to lead to a similar act of betrayal. “Therefore, you do not let the desire to take revenge on the person who betrayed him until he behaved like a person who betrayed him,” Chiwarak implored.

He specifically condemned the potential decision as a setback for political reform and a betrayal of the struggles for democracy that began in 2020.Chiwarak urged party leaders to resist what he described as “the tricks of the most popular” and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Reader question:– What role do activist groups play in Thai politics? They often mobilize public opinion and advocate for political change, notably regarding democratic reforms.

The letter also called on fellow activists and members of the House of Representatives within the People’s Party to voice their opposition to the proposed alliance. He emphasized the importance of upholding the principles they fought for and not allowing their past efforts to be rendered meaningless. “Do not let the past fighting be a waste,” he wrote.

chiwarak acknowledged that supporting the Phuea Thai party could damage the People’s Party’s reputation, but maintained that the party could regain trust by reversing course. he concluded with a stark warning: if the People’s Party proceeds with its support for Charnwirakul, he would be forced to withdraw his support for the party as a whole, though he would continue to support individual representatives committed to democratic principles. “But if you realy decide to support the Phuea Thai party, I can only show my condolences,” he
