In the United States, the Pentagon announces a new tranche of military aid to Ukraine of $775 million which includes, among other things, more missiles for the American Himars precision artillery systems. This new boost, the 19th since August last year, should help Ukraine counter the advance of Russian forces in the south of the country.

The United States has so far always ensured supplying only defensive weapons to Ukraine. They could now help the country in the counter-offensive, in particular to retake the strategic city of Kherson in the south of the country. This was suggested by a senior US Department of Defense official.

Reprendre Kherson would be a big blow to Vladimir Putin’s ambitions in Ukraine. The region is crucial for supplying Crimea with fresh water. It is also a key strategic point for any future Russian military advances south towards Odessa, the coveted jewel of the Black Sea.

Himar missiles and reconnaissance drones

Thanks to the use of American Himars missiles, the Ukrainians have also succeeded in recent weeks in stopping the advance of the Russians in the south and east of the country.

The new tranche of aid of 775 million dollars also provides for the shipment of mobile guns and 105 mm shells, compatible with armaments supplied by the United Kingdom.

Washington will also provide 15 Scan Eagle reconnaissance drones with a range of 100 kilometers, 1,000 new Javelin anti-tank missiles and for the first time MaxxPro anti-mine armored vehicles, needed to allow Ukrainian troops to retake territory.
