This is a new episode in the price war between distributors and manufacturers. Carrefour is removing Pepsico group products from its shelves as of this Thursday. Revealed Wednesday by Olivier Dauversspecialist in mass distribution, the information was confirmed by franceinfo.

The products concerned include Pepsi and 7 Up sodas. Lay’s chips or Lipton tea are also affected by this measure. The Bénénuts, Doritos and Quaker brands are also affected.

In practical terms, posters are placed on store shelves to indicate that a conflict between Carrefour and the manufacturer is in progress. They report an “unacceptable price increase” and the fact that Carrefour is “committed to lowering prices”.

Food prices remain up more than 7%

The disagreement has its origins in tariff negotiations. The distributor judges that Pepsico is asking for too high increases. It comes in a context where inflation is +3.7% year-on-year in December, up slightly compared to November (+3.5%). Food prices remain up more than 7% over the year after peaking at almost 16% in spring 2023.

RTL reports that the manufacturer would have requested an increase of around 7% in its products. If this corresponds to the current level of food inflation, the distributor seeks to negotiate downwards, the price trend being one step on the rise.
