The 2025 Bolivarian Games kicked off with a thrilling marathon event held this past Sunday in Lima, Peru, showcasing impressive performances from athletes across the region. Peru emerged as a dominant force, securing gold medals in both the men’s and women’s competitions, signaling a strong start for the host nation.

A Golden Day for Peruvian Runners

The 42.195 km race, starting and finishing in the historic Plaza Mayor of Lima, saw Peruvian athletes claim the top spots in a display of national pride and athletic prowess. Ferdinand Cereceda secured the gold medal in the men’s category, completing the course in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 38 seconds. Fellow Peruvian Ulises Martín Ambrocio followed closely behind, earning the silver medal with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 41 seconds. Ecuador’s Fernando Moreno Tapia rounded out the podium, taking bronze in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 17 seconds.

Bolivia’s Gualberto Castro Gallego finished fourth in the men’s race with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes and 23 seconds.

In a surprising upset, Ecuador’s Silvia Patricia Ortiz Morocho claimed gold in the women’s marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 54 seconds. Peru’s Sheyla Eulogio Páucar secured the silver medal with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 10 seconds, while Zarita Suárez Núñez earned the bronze for Peru in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 7 seconds. Bolivia’s Edith Mamani Sandoval finished fourth, completing the course in 2 hours, 57 minutes and 29 seconds.

Building Momentum for Team Peru

The marathon served as the opening event for athletics competitions within the broader Ayacucho-Lima 2025 Bolivarian Games. According to reports, the event represents a significant opportunity for the Peruvian delegation to secure early medals.

“This marathon is the first great opportunity for the Peruvian delegation to achieve its first medals in the Bolivarian Games 2025,” a senior official stated.

The success of Sheyla Eulogio, a 27-year-old distance runner who recently won gold at the South American Cross Country Championship in Colombia, has generated considerable excitement. Her victory in Colombia also qualified her for the 2026 World Cup.

Race Details and Viewing Information

The women’s marathon began at 05:30 am Peruvian time, followed by the men’s race at 05:50 am, both originating and concluding at the Plaza Mayor of Lima. Spectators were able to view the event free of charge.

The Marathon Route

The challenging 42km course took athletes through the heart of Lima, beginning at the Plaza Mayor and winding through key city landmarks. The route included Jirón Carabaya, Plaza San Martín, Avenida Nicolás de Piérola, Óvalo 2 de mayo, and a stretch along Paseo de los Héroes Navales before returning to the Plaza Mayor for the finish.
