Peso Pluma and Tito Double P’s “Dynasty” Ushers in a New Era for Mexican Music
A groundbreaking collaboration between cousins Peso Pluma and Tito Double P, the album Dynasty, released December 26th, signals a pivotal moment for the evolving landscape of regional Mexican music, blending tradition with contemporary sounds and navigating a complex political climate.
Peso Pluma (born Hassan emilio Kabande Laija) and Tito Double P (born Jesús Roberto Laija) discovered their familial connection only after Peso relocated to Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa in Northwestern Mexico. It was at a party, with Peso at 18 and Tito at 20, that the cousins first met, sparking a creative partnership that would soon redefine the genre.
Both were aspiring musicians, but Peso arrived with a distinct style, pioneering the corridos tumbados sound – a subgenre characterized by its lyrical focus on lifestyle and, at times, illicit activities. This marked a departure from the customary corridos de hombres, which typically celebrated heroes and anti-heroes. According to Tito, Peso’s energy was promptly captivating. “I made music as a hobby then,” he recalls, “And from the moment he arrived, I said, come here. I’ll write, you sing.”
That initial spark ignited a collaboration that propelled Peso Pluma to superstardom, with Tito Double P co-writing many of his biggest hits. More recently, Tito has also risen to prominence, and in 2025, the cousins landed at No.5 and No. 4 respectively on Billboard’s year-end Top Latin Artists chart. Dynasty represents their first full-length album together,a culmination of years of shared creativity and a testament to their growing influence.
The 14-track album is a diverse collection, ranging from ballads and love songs to powerful corridos rooted in Mexican tradition. Musically, Dynasty showcases a high level of sophistication, with intricate instrumentation and dynamic arrangements. The focus track, “dopamina,” exemplifies this, featuring ambient background vocals, dramatic tuba crescendos, and syncopated beats that complement the contrasting vocal styles.
“For a while,” Peso Pluma explained. “We’re proud to step up, take the hits and push the genre forward.”
The timing of the album’s release, following the Christmas holiday, is particularly important. As Peso Pluma noted, “Tito and I wanted to show everyone-Mexicans and the Latin community-that you can create beatiful corridos without glorifying crime or drugs.”
Tito Double P echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of “clean corridos” that focus on storytelling and emotion. “You don’t have to sing about the streets directly-it’s all in the tone and the instruments,” he said. “But we’re telling stories, sharing day-to-day experiences, and capturing emotions, that’s it.”
Peso Pluma added, “I told Tito from the beginning, ‘You’ve got an ear for what’s trending right now-for what the streets, the kids, and the women want to hear.Help me choose the songs and shape this project.'” The final tracklist, narrowed down from over 30 songs, reflects this collaborative approach, offering a diverse range of themes and emotions.
Dynasty is more than just an album; it’s a statement. It’s a testament to the power of family, the richness of Mexican culture, and the enduring appeal of corridos – a genre that, thanks to Peso Pluma and Tito Double P, is poised for a new golden age.
