Pete Townshend, the guitarist for The Who, has voiced his opinion on the highly anticipated Oasis reunion, expressing a lack of enthusiasm.
In a recent conversation with The Standard, Townshend revealed his disappointment regarding the band’s comeback tour slated for 2025. When pressed if securing tickets had been the issue, he clarified that his sentiment stemmed from a preference for the brothers’ individual musical endeavors.
Liam Gallagher has released three solo albums, "As You Were" (2017), "Why Me? Why Not." (2019) and "C’mon You Know" (2022), while Noel has produced four albums under his High Flying Birds moniker, the latest being "Council Skies" in 2023.
Interestingly, Liam Gallagher supported The Who on tour in 2019, and Noel previously opened for the band at their Teenage Cancer Trust concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2017.
Speaking to Radio X in late 2019, Townshend observed that the Gallagher brothers were pursuing distinct musical paths.
"Noel’s doing soundscape-y stuff – it’s really kind of rich and almost psychedelic,” he explained.
"And [Liam’s] trying to write songs. He’s learning still to write songs – it’s a craft he’s developing. He was thrown into it, he didn’t want to have to do it. But it just goes to show, I think anybody can write songs if they’ve got the patience.”
Despite Townshend’s personal reservation, other Who members have shown enthusiasm for the reunion. In 2022, Roger Daltrey expressed a heartfelt desire for Oasis to reunite.
"Liam, though, has really carved out a niche for himself now, and I love him,” he remarked. “I think he’s fabulous. He’s totally honest. He’s not frightened of saying how he feels.”
Oasis’ comeback tour, titled “Live ’25,” will kick off next summer with stadium shows in the UK and Ireland, including multiple nights at London’s Wembley Stadium and Manchester’s Heaton Park. Support will come from Richard Ashcroft and Cast. The band has confirmed that these European dates will be their only stop on the continent for their world tour, with plans underway for additional global performances.
Subsequent announcements have revealed American, Canadian, Mexican, and Australian dates for the tour, with an added Melbourne show due to overwhelming demand.
Confirming what many fans suspected, Oasis has ruled out a Glastonbury 2025 headline slot and any other festival appearances in the coming year.
The brothers have also denied reports of a possible return to Knebworth in 2026. Liam has stated that there are no plans for joint interviews surrounding the reunion, citing concerns over intrusive media questioning.
Finally, Oasis is taking a stand against ticket scalping, intending to cancel thousands of tickets purchased on resale sites.
