According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the department reported at a joint press conference with his Chadian counterpart, Mahamat Saleh Annadiff, that the two countries are launching a comprehensive cooperation program covering several strategic areas, which will have security, economic, humanitarian and educational pillars.

“This could be our biggest undertaking in Africa!” – wrote Péter Szijjártó for the video published on his social media page.

Regarding the former, he emphasized that security is the basis of economic development and social stability, and therefore Hungary is ready to contribute to Chad’s efforts to guarantee security in the Sahel region, which is also extremely important from the point of view of Europe, in order to make the anti-terrorist action in the region a success.

He emphasized: with the approval of the Parliament, our country can send up to two hundred soldiers to Chad for this purpose next year.

“It depends on the decision of your government and parliament as to what concrete form this military cooperation will take,” he said.

In Hungary, we value Chad’s role in maintaining stability in the Sahel, and we value Chad’s fight against terrorist organizations

he added.

The minister then touched on the other three pillars of bilateral cooperation. In connection with the economic field, he announced that they would support the investments of Hungarian companies in three important sectors for the Central African country, in the fields of safe water supply, modernization of agriculture, and the development and digitization of public administration.

He informed that within the framework of humanitarian cooperation, Hungary has sent and will send medical missions to Chad in order to contribute to the care of the approximately one million refugees in the country, in addition to helping in the training of operational specialists and launching a food safety development program.

Finally, he also mentioned that in the future, twenty-five Chadian students per year will be able to study at Hungarian universities with scholarships, and that the University of Agricultural Sciences will launch a wide-ranging agricultural training program in Chad.

“You can see that this is a broad partnership and cooperation covering many important areas, which we are ready to implement,” he concluded.

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that Europe’s security begins in Africa, as the experience of the past years has shown, which, according to him, everyone should see.

“The development, peace, and stability of Africa is a very important interest from the point of view of Europe, and thus also of Hungary,” he stated.

Péter Szijjártó stated that the government therefore strives for close cooperation with African countries that play a decisive role in terms of the security of the continent and confront terrorist groups.

We from Hungary, from Europe, are watching with concern the global rise of terrorist organizations, the fact that the threat of terrorism is increasing worldwide, and we know exactly that Africa, and within it the Sahel region, are particularly exposed to this danger

he warned.
