Silver Lining in Milan: American Ice Dancers Reflect on Olympic Result Amid Judging Controversy
The American ice dance duo of Madison Chock and Evan Bates secured a silver medal at the 2024 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, but their performance has ignited a debate over the judging that saw the French team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron claim gold. A petition calling for a review of the scoring is already gaining traction, reflecting widespread fan concern.

Despite the controversy, Chock and Bates expressed a profound sense of accomplishment and satisfaction with their skate. “We felt like we delivered our absolute best performance that we could have,” said one of the athletes, reflecting on their Olympic moment. “It felt like a winning skate to us, and that’s what we’re going to hold on to.”
The pair, who married in 2024, were aware of the growing online support, including a Change.org petition that garnered nearly 9,000 signatures as of Friday morning, demanding the International Skating Union (ISU) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) investigate the judging. While they hadn’t personally reviewed the petition, they acknowledged the significance of the public’s vocal support.
Years of Dedication Culminate in Historic Medal
This silver medal represents a landmark achievement for Chock and Bates, marking their first Olympic medal in ice dance after years of dedicated competition. They had previously earned two gold medals in the team event, including one in Milan. The emotional and physical toll of the past week, which included four performances across both the team and individual events, was palpable. “We have not, I think, fully processed everything that’s happened here,” one of the skaters admitted.
The intensity of the competition left them emotionally drained, but they are looking forward to celebrating with family and reflecting on their journey. They plan to remain in Italy through the closing ceremonies before taking ten days to celebrate and process the experience.
Transparency Concerns Threaten Sport’s Growth
Beyond the immediate disappointment, Chock highlighted a broader concern for the future of ice dance. “Anytime the public is confused by results, it does a disservice to our sport,” she explained. “It’s hard to retain fans when it’s difficult to understand what is happening on the ice.” She emphasized the need for greater clarity in judging criteria for skaters, coaches, and audiences alike, arguing that a solid fan base requires understanding and confidence in the sport.
Despite the questions surrounding the scoring, Chock and Bates remain resolute in their perspective. “A medal is a medal, the Olympic dream is alive, and it’s not something that is tangible,” one of the athletes stated. “It’s something that lives within us, and really is the driving force for our motivation and intrinsic goals.”
Looking ahead, the duo reaffirmed their commitment to the sport, stating they “certainly have plans to remain on the ice” and will continue performing together. Their dedication underscores a passion for skating that transcends any single result.
