Phoenix Restaurant Scene: Kabob Grill N’ Go Rebuilds, Scoopwell’s Dough Bar Closes

A resilient spirit defines the Phoenix culinary landscape as Kabob Grill N’ Go reopens following a challenging electrical fire, while beloved dessert spot Scoopwell’s Dough Bar has permanently shuttered all four of its locations. The contrasting fortunes of these two businesses highlight the precarious nature of the restaurant industry and the vital role community support plays in recovery.

Kabob Grill N’ Go: A Community Rallies

After an electrical fire forced its closure, Kabob Grill N’ Go has been able to reopen thanks to significant backing from the local community. Chef Tony Chilingaryan and his wife and co-owner, Hasmik, benefited from an outpouring of support during the difficult period of rebuilding. The extent of the community’s assistance wasn’t detailed, but their efforts proved crucial in getting the restaurant back on its feet.

Scoopwell’s Dough Bar: A Sweet Farewell

In stark contrast, Scoopwell’s Dough Bar, known for its popular edible cookie dough, announced the permanent closure of all locations on August 1. The announcement came via an Instagram post, expressing gratitude to customers over the past six and a half years.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closure of all Scoopwell’s locations, effective immediately. We want to thank everyone that walked through the doors over the course of the last 6 and a half years, without you we wouldn’t have ever had a business to begin with,” stated the post.

Founded by John and Kendra Scheer, the first brick-and-mortar location opened in Phoenix’s Uptown Plaza in 2019. A second location followed in downtown Gilbert in 2022. The company also expanded to serve its signature treat at major events, including State Farm Stadium and Chase Field. Despite this expansion, all locations have now ceased operations.

Looking Ahead in Metro Phoenix

The closures and reopenings reflect the dynamic nature of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s restaurant scene. While Scoopwell’s departure leaves a void for edible cookie dough enthusiasts, other new businesses are on the horizon. A recent report details upcoming openings, including new locations for Trader Joe’s and Harkins theaters.

The contrasting stories of Kabob Grill N’ Go and Scoopwell’s Dough Bar serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges and triumphs inherent in the restaurant industry, and the enduring power of community in the face of adversity.
