Photographer: a despised profession? 2024-03-22 08:19:47

by time news

In Bujumbura as elsewhere in Burundi, celebrating is part of our culture: birth, marriage, death, diploma or a simple certificate of completion of basic studies… For all these events, a key person: the photographer. Unfortunately, this artisan of the moment, guardian of our memories, is also the victim of contempt. I am your eyewitness.

In this tumultuous world where every event must be immortalized, young Burundian photographers are trying to do well. Among them, Luc*, a modest photographer whose destiny is intertwined with the vicissitudes of his art.

That day we were celebrating a friend’s wedding. As laughter resonates and smiles light up faces, Luc stands there, faithful to the post, capturing every moment with undisguised passion. From dawn to dusk, Luc is everywhere, satisfying everyone, braving hunger and fatigue.

As night sets in and stomachs growl, we are invited to sit down at the table. As the guests enjoy the feast, Luc, forgotten by everyone, seems invisible. Unable to curb his hunger in front of the crispy dishes, he approaches timidly, hoping for a well-deserved meal. Alas, the sharp words of the president of protocol stopped him in his tracks: “ We sha! You didn’t come to eat, leave and continue your work! »

It is in these moments of dishonor that the very essence of humanity wavers. The accusing look, the contempt disguised as an order, this humiliation weighs heavier than hunger and fatigue on Luc’s frail shoulders.

Sink or swim ?

Loris*, formerly Luc’s objective companion, chose a new career, to escape affronts and disappointments: “ My passion for photography was unable to overcome the disdain of my clients. I chose to free myself from this burden of humiliation », he confides, a glint of bitterness in his eyes.

However, not all photographers throw in the towel. For Sam*, photographer since 2018, the solution lies in solidarity and clarity of contracts. “ A photographer is more than a simple witness, he is the guardian of memories, and he deserves the respect and recognition of all », he proclaims with fervor.

In this tumult of emotions and challenges, let things be clear: the artist should never be sacrificed on the altar of indifference and disdain. With each moment captured, each smile immortalized, the photographer weaves the fragile threads of history, reminding everyone that each image is a reflection of our humanity. What could be more respectful than his contribution?
