A lifetime dedicated to the sport of basketball has been formally recognized. On november 24th, the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) bestowed upon coach Pierpaolo Carbone the prestigious title of “Meritorious Coach,” one of the nation’s highest federal honors.

The award acknowledges Carbone’s unwavering commitment and notable contributions to the development and promotion of basketball in Italy, notably within the Calabria region. According to a statement released by the FIP, “This recognition is a testament to Coach Carbone’s dedication to the Calabrian and national basketball movement,” a senior official stated.

A Four-Decade Legacy

Carbone’s journey in basketball began in 1983, earning his Student Coach qualification and embarking on a path of continuous growth. His career has been defined by consistent progress, marked by accomplished teams, promotions, playoff appearances, and a deep commitment to training and institutional leadership.

His technical career unfolded in several key stages:

  • 1983-1990: Obtained federal qualifications as both a Student Coach and a Coach, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
  • 1990s: Led teams in the Serie D, Serie B/2, and Serie B/1 championships, notably with AS Basket rende and CB Cosenza, playing a crucial role in the development of basketball within Cosenza.
  • 2001-2003: Guided Rende and MC Cosenza to championships in Serie D, securing their advancement to Serie C/2.
  • 2004-2010: Became a prominent figure in the National Serie C, coaching MC Basket Cosenza, AS Rosarno 2000, and C. Bk Cosenza, consistently leading teams to playoff contention.
  • 2011: Served as coach for the Women’s Serie B team, Pallacanestro Rende.
  • 2012-2020: Enjoyed a sustained period of success with bim Bum Rende in Serie C Silver.
  • 2021-2022: Led a team in Serie C Gold.
  • 2023-2025: Currently coaching the Interregional Serie B team,Bim Bum Rende.

Beyond the Bench: Institutional Leadership and Training

Carbone’s influence extends beyond the court. he served as President of the Calabria Regional Coaches Commission from 2009 to 2016, shaping the development of coaching talent in the region. Since 2012, he has been a 2nd level territorial trainer, and previously acted as a Provincial coordinator of the CONI Sports Introduction Centers from 1995 to 2001.

He has consistently invested in the next generation of basketball professionals, serving as a trainer in numerous FIP courses for Student Coach, Basic Coach, and Minibasketball. His commitment to ongoing professional development is evident through his continuous participation in PAO-FIP courses throughout Italy, and also his role as a trainer at federal exams and within the Federal Technical Centers of Calabria. Currently, he is a technician in the national Sport and Health projects – Junior Active School (2024-2025).
