After the spectacular exhibition of Mr. decision in Seravezza, the sculpture of almost six meters of Emanuele Giannelli was placed on Friday 2 July a Pietrasanta, “leaning” against the bell tower of the Cathedral (in the San Martino square) where he will stay for two months, in July and August. Inside the bell tower, under the helical staircase, a sculpture from the “Sospesi” series will also be placed. Mr Arbitrium will then be moved to the Cathedral of Carrara in September and, starting from October, it will be placed in Piazza Mazzini in Viareggio, supported by the GAMC, for about a month. Finally, at Christmas, he will be placed in the historic center of Lucca, to push the church of San Michele. After these dates, which are sure, there will be those of Rome, Florence and Milan, to be defined.

One week after the placement of Mr Arbitrium in Pietrasanta, the “Contemporary and Virtual Sculpture” event will take place at the premises of the MuSA (Virtual Museum of Sculpture), on 8 July at 7 pm. Professionals from the world of robotics scanning and sculpture, will discuss in a debate curated by Enrico Mattei, which will focus on sculpture and the virtual, how the most recent technologies can help contemporary sculpture and, in particular, how the technology of scanning and robotics allow the sculptor to undertake new expressive modalities, both formal and virtual. In addition to dealing with the technical aspects, we will also talk about the related risks, such as the idea that anyone can think of making a work of art.

Sculpture and virtual

In this moment, where the pandemic has taken us away from museums and galleries – says Emanuele Giannelli -, the artist is trying to embark on new paths of communication. Today, by scanning a sculpture, it can be inserted into a virtual environment, where new emotional typologies can be sought. You can access platforms already existing on the web: virtual galleries where professionals or simply people who have this curiosity can enter. Also by scanning, sculptures of different sizes and materials can be programmed with the robot. By scanning an urban space, for example, we have the possibility of inserting any sculpture carried digitally, so that the artist can see and control the functionality and emotionality of the work. The aim of this conference-debate will also be to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a technology that can both help and confuse the true work of the artist.
