Coast Guard Pilot Briefly Fired Over Forgotten Blanket in Kristi Noem Incident

A U.S. Coast Guard pilot was temporarily dismissed from duty following an incident involving a misplaced blanket belonging to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The incident highlights what the publication describes as “constant chaos” within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and raises questions about the influence of Noem and her close advisor, Corey Lewandowski.

The controversy stemmed from a situation where Noem’s blanket was left behind on an aircraft after a maintenance issue necessitated a change of planes. The pilot was allegedly fired by Lewandowski after the oversight, and instructed to arrange commercial travel home. However, the decision was quickly reversed when officials realized the pilot was the only one qualified to fly them back.

The Wall Street Journal’s investigation reveals a broader pattern of personnel upheaval within DHS. According to the report, Noem and Lewandowski have “fired or demoted roughly 80% of the career ICE field leadership that was in place when they started.” This aggressive restructuring has fueled internal tensions and concerns about the department’s effectiveness, particularly amid a federal immigration crackdown.

Noem and Lewandowski’s Leadership Style

The report details a contentious dynamic between Noem and Trump’s former border czar, Tom Homan. Sources suggest a rivalry for influence, with Noem reportedly monitoring television appearances to ensure she received more screen time than Homan. A senior official stated that Noem would “scold staff if she saw Homan on TV.”

This alleged pursuit of visibility comes after public criticism of Noem’s handling of an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, which was linked to the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, and Renee Good, a 37-year-old poet and mother of three. Following the tragedies, Noem incorrectly asserted that Pretti “committed an act of domestic terrorism” before his death. President Trump subsequently dispatched Homan to Minnesota, where he announced the termination of the Minneapolis operation.

Concerns Over Relationships and “Rehabilitation Tour”

The close relationship between Noem and Lewandowski has also reportedly caused discomfort among the president and his top advisors. Both are married and have publicly denied reports of an affair. The Wall Street Journal claims the pair have embarked on a “rehabilitation tour” to address the fallout from the Minneapolis operation and other controversies.

A DHS representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Rolling Stone. However, The Wall Street Journal reported that a spokeswoman stated Noem has “made personnel decisions to deliver excellence.”

The incident with the Coast Guard pilot, while seemingly minor, underscores the broader concerns raised by The Wall Street Journal regarding the leadership and internal dynamics within DHS under Secretary Noem and the influence of Corey Lewandowski. The report paints a picture of a department grappling with instability and a leadership focused on control and public image.
