App State (6-5) seized control early, capitalizing on early foul trouble in the pirates’ frontcourt and a frigid shooting start from East Carolina. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 9-0 lead, forcing an early Pirate timeout.Riley finally broke the scoring drought for ECU with a midrange jumper at the 14:55 mark, but App State continued to build its advantage. A three-point play by Alonzo dodd extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 13-5 at the second media timeout.
The Mountaineers’ lead swelled to as many as 18 points in the first half, leaving the Pirates facing a 33-17 deficit at the break. According to reports, the Pirates’ initial struggles from the floor – going 0-of-6 to start the game – significantly contributed to the widening gap.
Pirates Mount Furious Comeback, Fall Short
East Carolina emerged from halftime with renewed energy, embarking on a 7-0 run fueled by aggressive defense and forcing four app State turnovers. A three-pointer from Isaiah Mbeng pulled the Pirates within eight points. The defensive intensity continued, with ECU forcing two more turnovers after a timeout, and a jumper from Riley narrowed the gap to 38-32 with 14:51 remaining.
The Pirates continued to chip away at the lead, pulling within four points on an alleyoop from Giovanni Emejuru. Though, App State responded with a swift scoring burst to regain control. Tybo Bailey then ignited a spark for East Carolina, connecting on two crucial three-pointers, and a second-chance basket from Luke Davis brought the Pirates within a single point, 51-50, with seven minutes left to play.
Despite the momentum shift, East Carolina was unable to capitalize. App State responded with back-to-back scores from Luke Wilson,pushing their lead back to 11 and ultimately securing the 67-54 victory. Kasen Jennings led the Mountaineers with 20 points.
