Pirelli: Mario Isola Steps Down, Dario Marrafuschi Takes Over Motorsport Role

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

The world of Formula 1 is bracing for a shift in leadership at Pirelli, as Mario Isola prepares to step down from his role as Head of Motorsport. The change comes ahead of a pivotal season, marked by new regulations and tire development for 2026. Isola, a familiar face in the paddock and a key communicator for the Italian tire manufacturer, will leave his position on July 1st, seeking new professional challenges after nearly three decades with the company.

For years, Isola has been the public face of Pirelli’s F1 program, navigating the complex demands of teams and the scrutiny of fans and media alike. His departure marks the end of an era, but Pirelli has moved swiftly to ensure a smooth transition, naming Dario Marrafuschi as his replacement. This leadership change at Pirelli, a key supplier to Formula 1, is a significant development as the sport prepares for a new era of racing.

Marrafuschi will officially assume the role of Head of Pirelli’s Motorsport Business Unit on March 1st. A period of overlap between Isola and Marrafuschi is planned through June, designed to facilitate a seamless handover of responsibilities. Marrafuschi is not new to the world of motorsport or Pirelli, having joined the company in 2008. His experience includes extensive work in Formula 1 Research and Development, as well as more recent leadership in the development of Pirelli’s road tires. He will report directly to Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Executive Vice President of Sustainability, New Mobility & Motorsport.

A History with Ferrari

Before joining Pirelli, Marrafuschi spent seven years with Ferrari, from 2001 to 2008, working within their Formula 1 research and development department. According to Formula1.com, this background provides him with a deep understanding of the technical intricacies and competitive pressures inherent in the sport.

Pirelli’s Commitment to Formula 1

Pirelli’s involvement in Formula 1 dates back to 2011 and the company’s current contract extends through the end of 2027, with a one-year option for extension. Motorsport.com reports that the timing of this leadership change coincides with the development of new tires for the 2026 season. These tires will maintain the 18-inch wheel size but feature reduced width and external diameter, resulting in a narrower profile.

Isola’s Legacy

Pirelli has expressed its gratitude for Isola’s contributions over the years. The company statement, as reported by Google News, acknowledges his “significant contribution to the development of the Motorsport business unit, carried out with dedication and great passion.” Isola’s tenure has been marked by navigating the challenges of providing tires that meet the demands of increasingly sophisticated Formula 1 cars and the diverse requirements of each race circuit.

Looking Ahead

The transition of leadership at Pirelli comes at a crucial time for the sport. The 2026 season will bring significant changes to the technical regulations, and the new tires will play a vital role in shaping the competitive landscape. Marrafuschi’s experience in both Formula 1 and tire development positions him well to lead Pirelli’s motorsport efforts during this period of transformation. The Australian Grand Prix, scheduled for March 6-8, will kick off the 24-round 2026 calendar, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both Formula 1 and Pirelli.

Pirelli’s next official update regarding its 2026 tire development program is expected following the first few races of the season, providing further insight into the performance and characteristics of the new compounds.
