Pirmasens Imposes Freeze on Ukrainian Refugee Admissions

The city of Pirmasens in Germany has recently taken in a large number of refugees from Ukraine. In response, the city has implemented a temporary freeze on new admissions due to exceeding its admission quota.
The local administration explained the measure on Friday, citing that the quota was exceeded by 82.6% in July. Affected individuals will be directed to the nearest initial reception center for redistribution within the state.
The measure aims to prevent the city from becoming overwhelmed by the influx of refugees. While Ukrainian refugees are free to choose their accommodation in Germany, municipalities can impose a stop if their internal admission quotas are exceeded by 40%.
Since February 2022, Pirmasens has taken in approximately 900 people from Ukraine. The city has a population of around 41,000 residents. Exceptions to the temporary freeze may be made in cases where individuals can support themselves through employment.
