Google is rolling out a redesigned Gemini overlay for Wear OS, bringing a familiar visual language to the Pixel Watch. Version 1.36 introduces a Neural Expressive background, live prompt transcripts, and cross-device consistency with Android phones, though the update requires a server-side component to appear.
The Shift From Full-Screen App to Watch Face Overlay
Wear OS users summoning Gemini are finally getting an interface that matches how the assistant behaves on mobile devices and tablets. Historically, activating Gemini on a Pixel Watch meant launching a dedicated full-screen application that took over your entire watch face. While functional, that design never quite matched the smoother, more integrated feel you get when you summon Gemini on your phone. This new overlay appears over your current watch face, similar to Android phones and tablets.
The updated interface changes that workflow by rendering Gemini as an overlay directly on top of the active watch face. This adjustment borrows straight from your phone’s playbook, bridging the gap between wrist-based interactions and handheld devices. The assistant is getting a new overlay design based on Neural Expressive, the same visual language Gemini already uses on Android phones and tablets, and it is all in the name of making the assistant feel consistent no matter which screen you are tapping.
Visual Updates and Conversational Feedback
Beyond the layout change, the redesigned overlay brings familiar branding elements to the wrist. It features Gemini’s Neural Expressive background, as well as the spark icon and greeting Gemini uses everywhere else.
Little touches improve the feedback loop during everyday queries. Play Store screenshots also show off a couple of nice touches, including a transcript of your prompt and action confirmations once it finishes an action for you. You will see a live transcript of whatever you ask Gemini, plus confirmations once it finishes an action for you. It is a small change, but it makes the whole exchange feel less like a black box and more like an actual conversation.
Amid these interface changes, a small tweak moves the system microphone privacy indicator from the bottom of your screen to the top.
Cross-Device Consistency and Platform Integration
The redesign goes beyond surface-level aesthetics to address how an ecosystem feels in daily use. Cross-device consistency sounds like a boring phrase, but it genuinely changes how an assistant feels to use. When Gemini looks and behaves the same whether you are tapping your watch or your phone, it stops feeling like three separate assistants stitched together and starts feeling like one smart helper that just follows you around.
The full Gemini app on Wear OS also features the visual updates, thus unifying the assistant across all platforms. Google does not appear to have made any changes to Gemini responses, focusing entirely on bringing unified behavior to the assistant.
Rollout Status and What to Watch Next
This visual evolution was first previewed in May and on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, and the new look for Wear OS was revealed with Wear OS 7. Version 1.36 of Google Gemini on Wear OS has widely rolled out via the Play Store, but this new look has a server-side component that’s not yet widely available.
