Poland Raises Security Alert After Railway Sabotage, Cites Russian Collaboration

Poland has elevated its national security alert level following recent acts of railway sabotage attributed to individuals working with Russian intelligence services. The incidents, occurring in the Masovia and Lublin regions, prompted the implementation of enhanced security measures for critical infrastructure, though essential medical transport will continue uninterrupted.

A senior official stated that entities operating within critical infrastructure are now obligated to implement measures to mitigate the risk of “threats of a terrorist or sabotage nature.” The heightened alert, designated CHARLIE, is in effect from November 19, 2025, through February 28, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

Sabotage Disrupts Key Rail Lines

The immediate catalyst for the increased alert was a series of deliberate attacks on Poland’s railway network. On Saturday, November 16, 2025, two Ukrainian citizens, allegedly cooperating with Russian services, detonated an explosive device that damaged a section of track on the Warsaw-Dorohusk railway line near the town of Mika in Garwolin County.

The following day, November 17, 2025, a train carrying 475 passengers experienced a sudden braking event near the Gołąb railway station in Puławy County due to damage to approximately 60 meters of overhead contact line. While no injuries were reported in either incident, the events have raised serious concerns about the vulnerability of Poland’s infrastructure.

Increased Rail Shipments Highlight Growing Risk

The timing of these incidents is particularly noteworthy given the recent increase in rail traffic. PKP Intercity, Poland’s national rail operator, reported a significant rise in the number of conductor shipments in recent years. Last year alone, the company transported 60,000 such shipments.

According to a company release, the trend demonstrates a “noticeable systematic increase” from 53,971 shipments in 2020 to 60,002 in 2024. This growth in rail usage likely increases the potential impact of any future disruptions.

Essential Services Protected

Despite the heightened security concerns, authorities have emphasized that critical services will not be affected. The carrier confirmed that the suspension of services does not extend to the transport of shipments containing life-saving drugs, blood products, and biological materials. This prioritization underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health even amidst security challenges.

One analyst noted the situation is “beautiful and tragic,” drawing parallels to historical events and highlighting the delicate balance between security and essential services. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the potential for external interference in critical infrastructure.
