With Helldivers 2 there was a lot of anger from the community because PSN accounts were suddenly supposed to be linked. But that doesn’t apply to all PS games on Steam.

Tokyo, Japan – PlayStation has moved a bit away from its exclusivity strategy. The gaming platform Steam has particularly benefited from this so far. The co-op hit Helldivers 2 was released on Steam, and major PlayStation titles such as Horizon and Spider-Man are enjoying success. PlayStation is still the publisher behind these titles and after the shitstorm with Helldivers 2, the first developer is now making it clear who needs a PSN account on Steam.

PSN compulsory on Steam: Online features apparently decide

Which developers are we talking about? In this specific case it is “Sucker Punch Productions”. This is the studio behind the PlayStation hit Ghost of Tsushima. The open-world hit will be released on Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 16th. In the game you fight as a samurai warrior through Mongol-infested areas to protect your people and your homeland.

Who needs a PSN account? After the nasty Helldivers shitstorm, the question came up on X (Twitter) as to whether you also have to link a PSN account for Ghost of Tsushima. The answer is an interesting “yes,” because you don’t actually always have to have a PlayStation account.

Tweet translation: “FYI – A PSN account is only required for Legends Online multiplayer mode and to use the PlayStation overlay. It is not required to play the single player game.”

Does this apply to all PS games on PC? That cannot be said with certainty at the moment. Sucker Punch Productions’ statements are formulated in such a way that they could only apply to Ghost of Tsushima. What seems certain: As soon as a PS game has a multiplayer mode, a PSN account on Steam will probably be required in the future.

Incidentally, Ghost of Tsushima is one of the first games to bring PlayStation Trophies to the PC. In order to be able to unlock them, you will definitely need a PSN account.
