PM Sports Pika: CNC-Milled Bike Prototype

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

Gian Cla Haller, the founder of PM Sports, isn’t just a mountain biker—he’s an inventor at heart. And that passion has culminated in the Pika, a uniquely designed enduro bike currently undergoing rigorous testing. It’s a project born from tinkering with accessories like 3D-printed GPS mounts and chain guides, evolving into something truly special.

Milled From a Single Block

Unlike frames from brands like Actofive or Pole, which are constructed from joined shells, the PM Sports Pika’s main frame is machined from a single block of 7075 aluminum. This meticulous process includes a closed front triangle and extensive milling of the down tube, top tube, and rear triangle to reduce weight. Despite incorporating steel spring dampers, robust enduro tires, and a Pinion gearbox, the prototype weighs approximately 20 kilograms. However, PM Sports promises a low and centered center of gravity for enhanced handling.

In-House Developed Suspension

Developer Gian Cla Haller, self-taught in frame construction and suspension design, created a rear triangle with a virtual pivot point (VPP). This system aims to maximize suspension travel during aggressive riding, providing 160 millimeters of travel. The Pika utilizes progressive ratio kinematics to enhance sensitivity to small bumps and maintain ground contact.

Gear Shifting and Dampening

For the prototype, Haller opted for a Pinion gearbox with smart shift functionality, promising low maintenance and durability. The electronic control allows for customized gear shifting. The cockpit features a mass damper and an external steering damper from Pademelon, designed to improve steering precision and reduce arm fatigue. The bike is also equipped with a mullet wheelset from DT-Swiss and grippy Pirelli tires.

Editor’s Perspective

For me, nothing is more appealing than a meticulously milled CNC frame. The PM Sports Pika takes this to the extreme, representing a true work of art. The in-house chassis development and unique component choices make this prototype truly exceptional. – Jan Timmermann, Editor
