Lawyer Cristiano Zanin is the new Minister of the Federal Supreme Court. After a nearly eight-hour sabbatical at the Senate Constitution and Justice Committee, this Wednesday (21), he had his nomination approved by the plenary, with 58 votes to 18.

The meeting went smoothly, with praise for the trajectory and the profile seen as Zanin’s guarantor, even starting from names of the opposition. Awaited due to the raids that come from the Lava Jato Operation trials, the questions from Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) followed the warm tone of the interrogation.

Zanin was asked mainly about his proximity to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and about the possibility of judging actions related to Lava Jato. The PT’s former lawyer said that he will have independence and that he will not necessarily declare himself impeded in cases related to the operation or the president — he will carry out a case-by-case analysis.

Zanin reached the Senate with approval taken for granted, after an articulation that included dialogues with politicians from different affiliations and had the support of STF ministers. Lula’s former lawyer will take over from Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired in April; due to his age, he can stay at court until 2050.

This Thursday’s Café da Manhã (22) analyzes the Senate hearing and discusses how Zanin will join the current Supreme Court. The podcast interviews Rubens Glezer, professor of law at FGV, coordinator of the Supremo em Pauta project and author of the book “Catimba Constitucional: o STF, do Antijogo à Crise Constitucional”.
