The ranking of cinema admissions for 2023 (as of December 19) reveals an explosive cast: Super Mario, a video game character created in Japan, and a doll from the United States, Barbie, is ahead of a very French hero this year, Asterix.

► “Super Mario Bros” in first place on the podium

It’s an animated film which has risen to the top of the podium this year. Super Mario Bros, released in April, is the film that attracted the most spectators in 2023, with more than 7.3 million entries. This film retraces the adventures of the emblematic video game character and his friends, Luigi and Peach.

This animated feature film is followed by Barbiewhich records 5.8 million entries. They are the only two films at the box office to have more than 5 million admissions over the year.

Last year was the second opus of Avatar, The Way of Water, which topped the rankings, with nearly 7 million entries. A place acquired in just two weeks since the film was only released in theaters in mid-December 2022.

► “Barbie”, six consecutive weeks at the top of the box office

The feminist ode to the Mattel doll has established itself as the film that has remained at the top of the box office for the longest time in 2023. Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig – who will chair the next Cannes Film Festival – remained at the top of the admissions charts from July 9 to August 23, for six consecutive weeks.

► Three French people in the top 10

Asterix and Obelix: the Middle Kingdom, directed by Guillaume Canet, managed to climb to third place on the podium with 4.6 million entries. It also records the best start with nearly 1.9 million entries in the first week.

Two other French films appear in the top 10 this year: Alibi.com 2in fifth place, with 4.2 million entries, and the first part of Three Musketeersin seventh place, with 3.4 million entries.

The year 2023 thus marks the return of French films to the box office podium, after a year 2022 when no French film appeared in the ten most viewed, unheard of since 1989. Of the 78 films having exceeded the 500,000 entries, 32 productions were mainly French.

► An increase in the number of 18 %

Attendance at cinemas continues to rise this year, with more than 150 millions tickets sold in 2023, an increase of 18% compared to 2022. Last year, cinemas recorded 127 million admissions.

The largest increase is outside Paris. The number of entries thus increases very sharply in Dijon and Rouen (+ 28%), in Brest (+ 27%) and even in Reims (+ 26%). In total, 38 films attracted more than a million admissions over the year.

However, these figures are far from the pre-Covid attendance: 213 million admissions were recorded in 2019 and 201 million in 2018.

Disney first distributor

Disney studios win the title of leading distributor in France for the year 2023, with nearly 24 million cumulative admissions to these films. A first position acquired with the success of Guardians but also Elementaryet Wish at the end of the year. Released at the end of the year, they already account respectively more than 3 million and 1.3 million entries In France.

Universal is not far behind, with 21 million tickets. The studio was notably buoyed by the successful releases of Super Mario Bros but alsoOppenheimer (nearly 4.5 million entries) and Fast & Furious X (2,3 millions).
