A nineteen-year-old resident of Southampton who illegally entered the territory of Windsor Castle, where 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain celebrated Christmas, was detained on suspicion of possession of weapons. This was announced on Saturday, December 25, at the Thames Valley Police Department.

According to law enforcement agencies, the young man did not manage to get into any of the premises, since the security system was operatively triggered. He is also suspected of illegally entering the guarded object. The attacker’s motives are established.

Royals attend Christmas service

The incident occurred at 08.30 local time (11.30 Moscow time). The heir to the British throne, Prince of Wales Charles, his wife Camilla and other members of the royal family who were at that time in Windsor were promptly informed about him. Later, they attended a Christmas service in the chapel of St. George on the territory of the castle. According to the police, there was no threat to public order.

The most serious security incident at the monarch’s residence during the reign of Elizabeth II occurred in 1982, when an intruder entered the queen’s bedroom at her London residence, Buckingham Palace.

Elizabeth II did not appear in public

The royal family usually spend Christmas at the private Sandringham Palace in Norfolk in the east of England. However, for the second year in a row, due to the pandemic, this tradition has been abandoned – the celebrations are transferred to Windsor.

On Saturday, December 25, Elizabeth II did not appear in public. In a pre-recorded Christmas address that aired on central channels, she spoke, in particular, of the loss of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh Philip, who died on April 9 at the age of 99.
