The clearer the image becomes, the more it upsets those who appear on it. Tuesday, December 6, Gérald Darmanin made an update on the pension reform which deeply displeased the police unions. Invited on Franceinfo, the Minister of the Interior indicated that the agents employed in his services “will be concerned to work, like all French people, a little more”. These remarks were made when the head of government, Elisabeth Borne, is due to unveil, probably on December 15, the main lines of a reform which could push back the age of eligibility for a pension by two or three years.

Mr. Darmanin’s statements refer to one of the specificities enjoyed by civil servants in the so-called “active” categories. Men and women working in dangerous or arduous jobs are targeted: law enforcement, sewer workers, nursing assistants, prison staff, air traffic controllers, etc. The regulations allow them to retire earlier than other insured persons subject to common law: between 52 and 57 years old, compared to 62 years old.

At the end of October, as part of the consultation between the executive and the social partners on the reform, the Ministry of the Civil Service had indicated to the organizations of agents that the “perimeter” active classes would remain unchanged. In other words, the professions eligible for early departure will be the same as today. But those who exercise them will have to prolong their career, if the project to shift the age of opening of rights is implemented. “The idea of working longer must obviously apply to everyone and I have already said this to the police unions”affirmed, on Tuesday, M. Darmanin.

“Totally Above Ground”

The Minister of the Interior did not specify the number of additional years in activity that will be imposed. But some are already projecting a scenario where peacekeepers will have to patrol until « 60 ans » : “It seems unreachable and totally above ground to us”confides Grégory Joron, secretary general of the SGP Police-FO Unit, highlighting the ample and staggered time slots to which he and his colleagues are subject. “It is out of the question to touch the few advantages that remain to us”adds Fabien Vanhemelryck, Alliance number one, who says he is ready to start the ” balance of power “ if the government persists in its design. The derogatory regime that prevails for police officers is linked to the dangerousness of the profession and this has « accrue »he points out.
